Brominated flame retardants are widespread environmental pollutants. In humans, brominated flame retardants are known to be endocrine disruptors, and they are also suspected to be carcinogenic. Recently, the dechlorane analogue 2,2',2''-tribromocyclohexane (2,2',2''-TBC) has been recognized as a new class of compounds and is assumed to have some toxicity. However, the environmental fate and toxicological effect of 2,2',2''-TBC in vertebrates are still unknown. In the present study, toxicity of 2,2',2''-TCNB, 2,2',2''-TBB, and 2,2',2''-TBC was investigated by using the model organisms Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster. In the case of 2,2',2''-TCNB, the LC50 values of C. elegans and D. melanogaster were determined to be 70 and 70 μM, respectively. In the case of 2,2',2''-TBB, C. elegans and D. melanogaster were found to be slightly more sensitive than those exposed to 2,2',2''-TCNB. The LC50 values of C. elegans and D. melanogaster exposed to 2,2',2''-TBC were determined to be 120 and 120 μM, respectively. These results show that 2,2',2''-TCNB, 2,2',2''-TBB, and 2,2',2''-TBC are more toxic to C. elegans and D. melanogaster than to vertebrate cells.
